Welcome. I have been asked many times about where and how The Sturkling Diaries is produced, so here is an insight into my world. Starting with the studio (ie, back bedroom). As you walk through the door, you are confronted by the guardian!!! If you don't know the password, you will be in trouble!!! Once past the alien, things get a bit more comfy, with examples of two generations of arty types. Me on my Norton Commander, drawn by my daughter and a Magpie, drawn by one of my granddaughters.

To the left of the Dalek, the wall gives a clue of what to expect in the rest of the room. I have read many times from professional artists, that the studio should be a nice place to be and it should feature things that mean something. Basically, things that create inspiration. So, there are my two dogs (sadly departed),examples of bird movement and a lot of stuff that I just like. If you think that this is over the top, wait until you see the rest of it!!

The drawing board is a standard A3 version. Nothing special. I also have a portable version that I use downstairs. The usual artists light that can move in any direction and more reference material on the walls. Behind the board is the speaker that transmits all of my favourite music, which includes a mixture of rock and classical, from 'The Light Cavalry Overture' to 'Ace Of Spades'.

Getting back to something I mentioned earlier, there are two shelves above my drawing board that are packed with things that inspire. Most have been bought for me and have a special significance, others are just things that I like.

The way the art equipment is laid out is best described as 'organised chaos'. I doubt if anyone else would be able to work out the system, but it works for me!! Primary materials are Letraset Promarkers with the extra fine tip for filling and colouring and Copic fineliners for detail work.

The techie stuff. Not much really. A decent laptop and high dpi A4 scanner. The only digital work done on an episode of The Sturkling Diaries is a slight enhancement in colour. The computer also holds a lot of photos that I use as reference and many, many hours of music.

The reference library is fairly extensive. Trees, plants, animals, buildings, vehicles. Also books by famous comic strip artists who provide many tips. I often re-read the books and find things I missed earlier.

The Sturkling Diaries starts with a storyline. This is usually printed, so that I can make graphic notes alongside each part of the story. For drawing, I use scrap paper (usually donated by a family member or friend). Using the notes, a detailed sketch is produced using a 0.5 Pentel GraphGear mechanical pencil. As you can see, in this case, I have run out of room to draw the top end of the wing.

I trace the drawings when I am happy with them and make any changes (like extending the wing). I already know by this stage how this drawing will look in the finished picture. In some cases, the traced drawing is reversed, as with Sheppie in this scene, to improve the overall composition. The tracings are transferred onto high quality Bristol Board. The text and word balloons are then pencilled in. Finally, the backgrounds are pencilled in. I will cover this process along with the inking and colouring in more detail later.

Currently in the process of 'mapping' the production of the last four panels of SD94. I've taken photo's of every stage so I hope it will be of interest to those that appreciate how The SD's is produced. Will try to cover every aspect, but if I miss something, just ask. SD94 is about a week away from production, so I'll try to publish the mapping as soon afterwards as possible.

MAPPING THE FINAL FOUR FRAMES OF SD94. PART ONE:
As promised, here is breakdown of the whole process. Apologies in advance for poor English, missing things out or not being clear enough. I'm not very good at this as you will no doubt see. Here we go then:
